Recording
Louisville
On July 13th 2010, at a press conference, My Morning Jacket confirmed that they were in fact working on a new album. In an Rolling Stone interview published in August of the same year Jim James stated that the band had five songs done and that they'd worked a couple weeks at that point, and would continue for another month (Rolling Stone). James also mentioned that the band would be recording the upcoming album in a church in Louisville. Read more about the band's time spent recording in the church here.

Sound/themes
In a 2010 interview Jim James compared the new album to 2008 album Evil Urges, saying that Evil Urges was the hardest record the band ever made and that the new sessions sounded more upbeat. He also explained that the band was trying to do as much as possibly live. Read more about the album's sound and themes here.

Influences
In a 2010 interview with Post-Gazette Bo Koster was asked about new influences on the upcoming album, Koster answered that he wasn't sure.
"There may be -- I'm not sure! It's always hard to describe for me. I think all of our influences are there one way or another, whether it's in a subtle way or overtly."
