Black Cab Sessions

Carl Broemel and Jim James during the Black Cab Session

The Black Cab Sessions is a series of one-song performances by musicians and poets recorded in the back of a black cab and filmed for an internet audience. A black cab is a type of hackney carriage (taxicab) common to Britain. The sessions are recorded while the black cab that serves as the studio travels through city streets, usually in London, England. The motto of the Black Cab Sessions is "one song, one take, one cab."

The Black Cab Sessions video clips begin with a screen showing the name of the artist and date the session was recorded. This is followed by a shot of the cab driver, who has just been informed that his cab will play host to the sessions, introducing the artist. The artists then give their performance.

On the 19th May 2008 My Morning Jacket performed at a Black Cab Session, however the performances only features Carl Broemel and Jim James. They perform Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt. 2. James plays his Omnichord, while Broemel plays guitar.

Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt. 2, performed on Black Cab Sessions

In an interview with The London Evening Standard James said that the experience was one of the coolest things they've ever done and that he chose to play Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt 2, because it involved playing the Omnichord, and no one else on the site had used one at that point. According to the same interview the cab driver thought the song was a lovely tune and asked for both the name of the band and if they perhaps needed a road manager?
